PE Vision
Our vision is for all children at St Gabriel’s School to experience excellent physical education, school sport and physical activity that will lead to life-long participation. We aim to develop a balanced programme offering a variety of activities to enhance skills in physical education. Positive participation in physical education will enable children to build, self-esteem, team work and positive attitudes in P.E.
Our PE curriculum aims to ensure that all pupils develop the fundamental skills and competence to excel in a wide range of physical activities by providing a broad and balanced curriculum with opportunities for all to be enjoyed. A high-quality PE curriculum will develop physical literacy and will allow pupils to learn about themselves, the importance of a healthy lifestyle, self-expression and concepts such fair play and respect. It also contributes to the development of a range of important cognitive skills such as decision-making and analysis, and social skills such as teamwork and communication.
Our PE curriculum is inclusive and ensures that pupils of all abilities access the range of activities we offer and that they are physically active for sustained periods of time in order to encourage them to lead healthy, active lives. There are also opportunities for pupils to take on leadership roles in which they can build character and embed values such as fairness and respect.
A high-quality physical education curriculum can inspire all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. We follow a programme of intra and inter-school competitions, which provide opportunities for pupils to participate in competitive sports and activities both in and beyond the curriculum.
Our mission is to improve and increase the quality and quantity of high-quality PE for pupils, to show how PE can enhance pupils’ attainment and achievement and to create pathways for them to continue to be active beyond school. We foster links to outside agencies and clubs, helping to generate positive interaction in the community.
We provide regular CPD to enhance the teaching and learning of PE, promoting participation, progress and performance. Teachers and support staff work alongside sports coaches to deliver high quality lessons which build on prior learning.
Our school also recognises the impact that a high-quality PE and school sport curriculum has on whole school improvements. PE Passport provides a secure system of monitoring and evaluation to encourage children to review and reflect on their learning through the use of video recording. It informs teachers and enhances pupil self-assessment of the quality of rich transferable skills and knowledge.
PE Kit
All children wear a purple school hoody and black jogging bottoms on the day they have PE. We ask that all children wear black trainers on that day too. Jewellery should not be worn at anytime in school (no earrings allowed). Finally, shoulder length and long hair should be tied back.
The PE Curriculum
A wide range of activities are delivered in school which aim to engage and inspire all children. We aspire to provide 2 hours per week of high-quality, well-planned PE.
Over the year each child will participate in games, athletics, dance and gymnastics lessons. Sporting activities include football, cricket, tag-rugby, basketball, netball, tennis, hockey, cross country and golf. Workshops are also provided to capture all interests including various dance genres, skipping and martial arts. Children gain access to a swimming programme and all children should leave our school, at the end of Year 6, able to swim at least 25 metres.
Adventurous activities in Year 6, include climbing, abseiling, raft building, problem solving and orienteering which are delivered while they attend an annual residential at Ford Castle.
Talented children are signposted to local clubs and events to encourage them to develop their skills. Most recently some children joined a county athletics event and various football clubs.
All teachers provide extra-curricular clubs for children throughout the year. We track all of our children’s participation in school clubs and sporting events in order to ensure we can provide something for all groups.
